BABY SEAL FIGURE (PAPO) BABY SEAL FIGURE (PAPO) 56028 Phocidae or true seals (Phocidae) are a family of pinniped mammals adapted to living in aquatic environments most of the time. The common name derives directly from the Latin phoca, which in turn has its origin in the Greek. 33 species are known. They lack an auditory pinna and their hind limbs are directed backwards and are not functional in land movement, a characteristic that differentiates them from otarids (sea lions and sea bears). Characteristics Seals inhabit the coastal regions of a good part of the globe, with the exception of the tropics. They have elongated and spindle-shaped bodies, adapted to swimming; the forelimbs are short and flattened.
