It's a dance named for the port city of Charleston, South Carolina, as it was popularized by a 1923 tune called The Charleston, by composer James P. Johnson. This tune was part of the Broadway show Runnin' Wild, which was performed between October 29, 1923 and June 28, 1924 and became one of the most popular hits of the decade.
The peak year for the success of the Charleston was from mid-1926 to 1927.
