More information

Valentino Rossi is not only a nine-time World Champion in motorcycling. The Italian is considered one of the greatest athletes of all time and his influence extends far beyond the MotoGP paddock. 14 years with the Yamaha MotoGP factory team have resulted in more than 50 GP victories and four world titles, cementing his place in history as the brand's most successful rider.

After starting out in karts, it wasn't long before "The Doctor" followed in his father Graziano's footsteps into motorcycle racing, winning the regional minibike championship in 1992, at 13 years old, before embarking on his career as a professional rider.

Rossi would win Italian championships in 1995 and 1996, also impressing by finishing third in his first season in the 125cc European Championship, before making the step up to the World Championship in 1996.

His first 125cc World Championship victory came in the Czech Republic that year, and in his second season, Rossi was simply unstoppable , winning 11 races to take his first world title.

In his first season in 250 cc in 1998, Rossi narrowly missed out on the title against many established riders in the category, but returned the following year with a dominant new display to take his second world title.

That led to his promotion to the 500cc class just at the turn of the century and it wasn't long before Rossi became in the main attraction of the world of motorcycling. The Italian took his first victory in the premier class at Donington Park that year and came second in the final standings against multiple former champions and legends of the sport.

2001 would mark the beginning of the "Rossi era" and in that season VR46 would win 11 of the 16 races to be crowned 500 cc world champion. In 2002, the premier class became MotoGP, but despite the change of name and bikes, which went from 500 cc two-strokes to 990 cc four-strokes, there were no changes in the dominance of the category. Rossi won the title that year and again in 2003, before beginning a long association with Yamaha
