Description

Stuffed Dragon Sant Jordi of 36 cm. The Day of Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalonia, is a festival that over the years has acquired a vindicative tone of Catalan culture. For this reason, many balconies in the city are decorated with the senyera, as happens on other dates throughout the country. The central elements of the celebration are culture and love -represented by the book and the rose- and in Barcelona the main meeting point is located on La Rambla, which is filled to overflowing with booksellers and florists. For Sant Jordi it is common to find books in all the languages spoken in Catalonia, but there are many stalls specializing in books in Catalan, because it is considered a day for the promotion and defense of Catalan culture and language.

Stuffed toy Dragon Sant Jordi 36 cm.

The festival of Sant Jordi is celebrated throughout the country on April 23, the day the knight Jordi died. The saint, who was under the orders of Emperor Diocletian, refused to follow the order to persecute Christians, for which he was martyred and beheaded. Very soon they began to venerate him as a martyr and fantastic stories linked to his figure immediately appeared.

The cult of Sant Jordi spread fully to all the Catalan countries during the Middle Ages, although this devotion already existed in the 8th century. And since 1456 it is the official patron of Catalonia.

Although the festival has been celebrated with more or less intensity since the 16th century, it is at the end of the 19th century, with the political and cultural movement of the Renaixença, when Sant Jordi was established as the patriotic festival, The most celebrated civic and cultural event in Barcelona and Catalonia.

In the 15th century, a rose fair was already organized in Barcelona on the occasion of Sant Jordi. Mostly boyfriends, fiancés and young married couples attended, and this suggests that the custom of giving a rose originates from this festival, which was held at the Palau de la Generalitat.

On the other hand, the origin of the festivity associated with the book can be located in the twenties of the last century, when the Valencian writer Vicent Clavel i Andrés, director of the Cervantes publishing house, proposed to the Official Chamber of the Libro de Barcelona and the Publishers and Booksellers Guild organize a party to promote books in Catalonia. The date chosen was October 7, 1927.

In 1929, during the Barcelona International Exposition, booksellers decided to organize themselves and took to the streets to set up beach bars to present novelties and encourage reading. The initiative was so successful that it was decided to change the date and April 23 was established as Book Day, the day that coincides with the death of two great authors in the history of literature: Cervantes and Shakespeare.

Right from the beginning, the festival contributed to giving a strong boost to Catalan editorial production and it still retains this essence today. And the significance of the Catalan holiday has been so great that in 1995 the UNESCO General Conference declared April 23 World Book and Copyright Day.
