The red panda or lesser panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a species of carnivorous mammal in the Ailuridae family, although it had been classified within the procionid and ursid families. It is the only species in the genus Ailurus, and the only one in the family Ailuridae; It is among the endangered species, since its populations are threatened by habitat loss, poaching and inbreeding, and are protected by the national laws of some countries. The red panda is native to the mountainous regions of the Himalayas, Bhutan, southern China, India, Nepal, and Burma, although there are hints from the fossil record that prove its ancient existence in North America.
