Crayola has been inspiring creativity since 1903, when the first package of Crayola crayons rolled off the production line. Over time, the Crayola brand has evolved to offer a wide variety of creative tools, activities, and games that allow children to bring their imaginations to life.
Whether providing creative tools to bring any idea to life or helping teachers bring art and creativity into the classroom, Crayola is committed to helping parents and educators raise creatively vibrant children.
Crayola envisions a world where children's natural creativity is nurtured and enhanced into adulthood, helping to make the world more curious, imaginative, joyful, and connected. The company originated when cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith took over Edwin's father's pigment company in 1885. Their early products included red oxide pigments, used for exterior paint, and carbon black for automobile tire production. After noticing a great need for safe, high-quality, and affordable coloring tools, in 1903 Crayola created the first package of eight-color wax crayons, which sold for just 5 cents. Since 1984, Crayola has been part of Hallmark Cards and has offices in Canada, Mexico, Italy, Australia, Asia, and the United Kingdom. The company retained the names of its founders, Binney & Smith, until 2007, when it officially became Crayola, to reflect its number 1 brand. Crayola's headquarters and main manufacturing facilities are located in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, where the company has been operating since the early 1900s. In addition to producing Crayola products, the company also manufactures Silly Putty, develops entertainment content through Crayola Studios and Crayola Experience, and supports fundraising activities for various non-profit organizations through Crayola Flowers.
